Simple Living: Redefining My Goals & Foundation

This journey began with the realization that there are many practices I’ve wanted to incorporate into my life, but I struggled with where to start and what was feasible. This process is unique to each person, shaped by emotional, spiritual, mental, and even physical circumstances. While I’ve always been drawn to mindfulness, movement, healthier eating, and a mindful pace to simple living, I’ve made progress in these areas—and that’s what it’s all about. However, it wasn’t until this year that I was able to fully commit to this journey in a way that felt realistic for my life.

One thing I never want to do is force myself—or make my audience feel—that taking steps toward simplified living is impossible. The reality is, the circumstances surrounding our intentions don’t always align, and it may take time to feel ready to move forward.

So, this year and the year upcoming, I’ve decided to approach simple living in phases. This blog post is about redefining my goals for this new season of life—especially after moving to a new city and state. My environment here plays a direct role in how I simplify my life, providing more space for changes that better align with where I am now.

Simple Living: Redefining My Goals & Foundation

It took me some time to narrow things down, but I think, ultimately, it’s always a good idea to start by defining my goals in the simplest way possible and build from there. I even created a detailed list of actions, almost like a checklist, to get started right away. As admirable as that effort was, it didn’t feel as connected to the foundational things I identified as important for me. After some gentle outlining and reframing, I came up with the following three foundational starting points—and how I’m working on each one this year.

It was important for me to format these three goals as questions, as this helps me think things through and place emphasis on answering them with my values in mind. Feel free to use this method as an example to help guide you in achieving the same.

1. How can I begin building sustainable habits?

When I decided to empower myself to take control of my personal wellness journey offline two years ago, one of my primary focus areas was improving my relationship with food. In doing so, I’ve not only made significant progress in my overall wellness but also laid the groundwork for my ultimate goal of creating sustainable practices around food and food resources. This year, I’m expanding my knowledge by taking nutrition courses and exploring the benefits of seasonal and medicinal herbs. I’m also incorporating a new focus: learning how to grow food sustainably at home. These steps are shaping a more intentional and self-sustaining approach to wellness that feels both meaningful and achievable.

2. What does prioritizing wellness mean to me now in this season of living?

Over the past few years, I’ve made great strides in my wellness journey, particularly in my nutritional habits, which I’m committed to maintaining at their current pace. I've also made progress in my mental health, but this year, I’m focusing more on emotional health and physical movement. I’ve begun incorporating 10-minute yoga sessions and meditation rituals into my routine, and my plan is to build on these practices throughout the year to support my emotional well-being and improve my physical mobility.

3. How would you like to create a harmonious home in this new environment or season?

After moving to a new city and state, it was important for me to take my time and thoughtfully decide where everything should go—without rushing the process. For now, many things are tucked away temporarily, but I plan to revisit and reconsider their permanent places as I settle in. My immediate goal has been to make the living room feel cozy for the winter season while using this time to brainstorm better storage and organization solutions. This move feels like a fresh start, and I want to be intentional about filling the space with items that truly resonate with my creative spirit and align with the peaceful atmosphere I’m trying to cultivate.

As I continue shaping my own simple living journey, I encourage you to reflect on what simplicity means to you—start by identifying one or two areas where you can focus your energy and build from there. Remember, the path to simple living is unique to each of us, and it’s the small, thoughtful steps that create lasting change.
